CHECK WASHING
Check Washing
What's That? How Can I Prevent It?
Check Washing is a type of fraud where criminals steal checks and use chemicals to erase the ink, allowing them to rewrite the check with a new payee and amount. This can ultimately result in significant financial losses for the victim.
How to Prevent Check Washing:
- Use Gel Pens: Write checks with gel pens, as the ink is more resistant to washing
- Mail Checks Securely: Avoid leaving checks in your mailbox for pickup. Instead, drop them off directly at the post office or use secure mailboxes.
- Monitor Bank Statements: Regularly check your bank statements for any unauthorized transactions.
- Use Electronic Payments: Whenever possible, use electronic payment methods instead of checks.
Keep Checks Safe: Store your checkbook in a secure place and only carry checks when necessary
